     The USS North Carolina Pen

The Battleship USS North Carolina served in WWII in the Pacific theater. The ships keel was laid in 1937, however it took 4 years to finish building. Commisioned in 1941, she was considered the most formidable battleship of her time. Originally, the battleship was the most important ship in the fleet, yet it was gradually supplanted by the aircraft carrier. As times changed, the battleship's role evolved into the primary support and protection of the carriers. The Japanese feared her and tried to sink her multiple times, erroneously reporting success at least four times during the war. In all, she participated in multiple conflicts, losing only 10 men in combat. Decommisioned in 1947, she was placed in reserve and destined to be scrapped. A campaign to save the ship was begun and in 1958 she became a living museum anchored in Wilmington, N.C.
During her refurbishment, teak was removed and is now available for pens.
